bag

Plastic bag

A frequent find on our shores, these bags were originally thought to be have been used for carrying items bought whilst ‘shopping’, a popular pastime in the Age of Oil (also known as the Consumer Age when whole town centres and surrounding areas were given over to shops). However, this idea has recently been rejected by sociologists as it fails to explain why so many bags have been found at sea.
It is now believed that these items may have been utilised by coastal peoples from the late 21st century to collect sand & shingle for building and water for washing as infrastructure began to break down before the introduction of local micro-systems. They may also have been used for the deliberate entrapment of marine mammals and turtles for food.
