Ritual bows and triangles

These eye-catching packets contained some kind of food item, which was probably eaten whilst on the move. The packet was then ritualistically folded and tied into an attractive bow or triangle and disposed of in running water (sea or rivers). Stories exist that bags were tied in this way to avoid the entrapment of hedgehogs and other wildlife, but it is considered more likely that the bags which were left untied (and which therefore flew in the face of accepted ritual) were on the contrary disposed of in this way precisely in order to capture wildlife for pets or, more likely, for food.
