ABOUT FRAN

I live near the Suffolk coast, where I attempt - with mixed success - to grow a lot of our own food and to create a haven for wildlife. (The two things don't always go well together...).

I am inspired by the sea and like nothing more than to spend time walking on the coast near my home. And I love to collect - especially the discarded and unvalued - and I use these materials in my art.

Most of the items in the museum are from my own collections (I have collected more than 100,000 pieces of plastic whilst walking on local beaches; even our dog gets fed up with me when I'm in 'collecting mode'!).

Whilst my work is seriously researched, I love to use humour in my work (I describe it as 'playful but deadly serious') and I try to make my exhibitions visually enticing. But the sting is in the detail... I hope through my work to deliver an unforgettable message.

I really believe that everyone can make a difference and I hope the museum, exhibitions and website will inspire you, too, to help create change in our world, both through what we personally can do (in one of my madder moments I ‘saved’ one square mile of sea by collecting 46000 pieces of plastic marine debris whilst walking on local beaches) and perhaps through events and projects.

You can see more of my projects (including my attempt to save a square mile of sea) on my website www.flyintheface.com.

I love hearing from people who have seen my work or visited my website, and to hear about what you are doing too - so please do get in touch if you feel like or if you would like to receive very occasional updates about what I'm up to.

Good luck!
